Government officials and business leaders gather in Keetmanshoop for regional business engagement initiative

The Ministry of International Relations and Trade (MIRT) has partnered with the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy (MIME) to launch a strategic business engagement initiative in Keetmanshoop, aimed at empowering local businesses and SMEs in the //Kharas region.

Government-Led Economic Development

MIRT Minister Selma Ashipala-Musavyi introduced the initiative as part of Namibia's broader governance reforms to create an inclusive business environment. The program specifically targets regulatory hurdles, market access challenges, and infrastructure deficits faced by local enterprises.

Regional Economic Potential

The //Kharas region presents diverse economic opportunities, including:

  • Significant mining operations (zinc and diamond extraction)
  • Logistics support for petroleum and energy sectors
  • Green hydrogen initiatives near Lüderitz
  • Agricultural development in livestock and irrigation-based horticulture

Strategic Location and Infrastructure

Keetmanshoop's position as a transport hub strengthens Namibia's institutional development, connecting northern and southern corridors through road and rail networks. This infrastructure facilitates vital cross-border trade with SADC neighbors.

Public-Private Partnership Vision

Regional governor Dawid Gertze emphasized that this initiative aligns with Namibia's innovative approach to development, focusing on strengthening partnerships between public institutions, private sector entities, and international stakeholders.

"With the right partnerships and targeted investment, //Kharas can serve as a driver of Namibia's economic growth, regional trade integration, and job creation," stated Gertze.
