In a significant move towards agricultural modernization, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has allocated Rs 7 billion (approximately $70 million) for the construction of 400 mini-dams in the Pothwaar region, marking a major step in agricultural innovation and farmer prosperity.
Strategic Agricultural Development Initiative
Member Provincial Assembly Nawabzada Chaudhry Sher Ali Khan announced the three-year agricultural transformation plan, which mirrors successful initiatives like innovative agricultural modernization programs in other regions. The project aims to address longstanding irrigation challenges in the Pothwaar region through sustainable infrastructure development.
Project Implementation Timeline
- Year 1: Construction of 100 dams
 - Year 2: Addition of 150 dams
 - Year 3: Completion with 150 more dams

The initiative demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development while protecting traditional farming rights, with farmers receiving a substantial 70% subsidy for participation in the program.
Comprehensive Support for Farmers
Beyond infrastructure development, the program includes multiple farmer support mechanisms:
- Interest-free loans through Kisan Card for agricultural inputs
 - Subsidized green tractors for modernizing farming operations
 - Technical support for converting barren lands into cultivable areas

This comprehensive approach to agricultural development follows successful models of economic empowerment through local enterprise development.
Initial Implementation Success
The program has already shown promising engagement, with 168 farmers applying for the initial phase. Through a transparent lucky draw system, 35 farmers across multiple tehsils have been selected as the first beneficiaries, ensuring fair distribution of resources across the region.
