Miranda Fryer, former Neighbours child star, dies at 34 while pursuing nursing career
Miranda Fryer, who played Sky Mangel on the Australian soap opera Neighbours during its golden era, died in her sleep in January 2022 at age 34. The former actress had left showbusiness to build a career in nursing and had recently graduated before her death.
Fryer joined the cast of Neighbours in 1989 at just 18 months old, becoming the first child actor to receive a contract on the show. She played the young Sky Mangel for three years, appearing as the daughter of Joe and Kerry Mangel. When the character returned as a teenager in 2003, Fryer had already stepped away from acting and was replaced by Stephanie McIntosh.

Instead of continuing in showbusiness, Fryer chose a completely different path. She pursued a nursing degree, completing it in the middle of the Covid pandemic. She was set to join Monash Hospital's neuroscience department in February 2022 and planned to earn a master's degree in neuroscience.
Her qualifications also included a certificate in hospitality and an art diploma.

Fryer died in her sleep in January 2022, less than two years after marrying Arthur Pothitis in November 2020. The couple had hoped to become parents. Her family never released a cause of death, though she was known to have heart issues.
In a statement at the time, her family said:
True soulmates, Miranda and Arthur (Pothitis) were making plans to start their family, when one day last week she went to sleep and never woke up. We do not know why. She had had some health issues with her heart, maybe her beautiful persona was just too good for this world of ours.

Jan Russ, a Neighbours casting director, said:
I feel so very sad to lose one of my cast and especially one so young as Miranda who spent her very young years on the show. I love them like my own and feel the loss when they pass.
Fryer's mother, Traci Hunter, told the Herald Sun:
She was the most wonderful daughter. She had so much love and passion for life. She was a truly kind, loving person, almost too good to be true... Miranda was adored by everyone.
The fan account Erinsborough News also paid tribute on Instagram, extending deepest sympathies to her family.
