US Lawmakers Probe $70M Luxury Jet Deal and Donor Ties
A Question of Public Procurement and Oversight
Representative Robert Garcia, the leading Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, is demanding transparency regarding a $70 million luxury jet acquired by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Garcia sent a formal letter to Fertitta Enterprises Inc. on Thursday, requesting contracts and internal communications with former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. Records indicate the company previously owned the aircraft.
Lawmakers are scrutinizing the purchase of the luxury Boeing 737 Max, which features a bedroom, bar, and flat screen TVs. This review is part of a broader investigation into procurement decisions made under Noem and her de facto chief of staff, Corey Lewandowski.
Initially, immigration enforcement officials stated the aircraft would support deportation operations. However, department officials later informed the Wall Street Journal that the jet would be available to Cabinet members and other officials, including First Lady Melania Trump.
Tracing the Donor Network
Fertitta Enterprises Inc. is affiliated with billionaire businessman Tillman Fertitta, the current Ambassador to Italy, who has donated thousands to Trump and associated political action committees. The company did not sell the jet directly to DHS. Instead, it sold the aircraft for an undisclosed sum to Valkyrie Aviation, a company linked to William Walters. Garcia describes Walters as a pro-Noem donor who secured a lucrative contract under her leadership.
Garcia has already requested information from Walters. Now, he is asking Fertitta Enterprises to disclose the sale price to Valkyrie Aviation and whether any company representatives received anything of value or favorable treatment from Lewandowski.
Allegations of Self-Dealing and the Push for Institutional Reform
The inquiry touches on fundamental issues of civic accountability and the safeguarding of public funds. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee are examining potential corruption, self-dealing, and mismanagement at DHS. Lewandowski has faced accusations of soliciting payments to help companies secure government contracts.
While the American people are struggling to make ends meet, Trump Administration officials are jet-setting in a luxury private jet. Did top officials buy themselves a $70 million plane from connected donors with taxpayer money and lie about its purpose?
A lawyer for Lewandowski has strongly denied the claims, stating his client adamantly denies ever demanding payment from any government contractor. The lawyer added that the allegations stem from anonymous sources and lack evidence, and that Lewandowski played no role in reviewing or approving contracts.
A DHS spokesperson previously stated that the luxury jet was purchased before Secretary Markwayne Mullin replaced Noem. They emphasized that the aircraft provides cabinet members with secure command, control, and rapid long-range mobility.
For advocates of transparent governance, the controversy underscores the critical need for stringent oversight in public spending. Garcia has set a deadline of June 4 for Fertitta Enterprises to respond to his inquiries.
